Isaurian Dynasty

Isaurian Dynasty
Ruled Byzantium (q.v.) from 717-802. Theophanes the Confessor (q.v.) reports that the first Isaurian ruler, Leo III (q.v.), was an Isaurian (q.v.), though in reality he came from Germanikeia (q.v.). Nevertheless, the name has stuck for this dynasty, a dynasty so closely tied to Iconoclasm (q.v.) and to the struggle with the Arabs in Asia Minor (qq.v.).
